I'm planning on buying a new lens (probably a used one) for my Nikon D5100...

But, I must admit, I am quite nervous, since the last lens I bought for $600 turned out to be horrible.

I haven't decided what I need the lens for yet, so we'll go down the list of possible things I would need a lens for, and YOU make some suggestions.

So, Photographers who have decent to high quality photos ...
What lens should I buy for... :

Macro photos?
Portraits?
Landscape shots?
Long distance shots of people or animals?
Still life?
Architecture photography?

COMMENT with suggestions, and if you have some photos taken with the lens, include a link!
I hope this helps others who are looking for new lenses as well.

Also, what a great group! I love your idea for the separate categories for each Nikon camera model. (Btw, I have two; a D40 which I have had for years and is a very reliable camera and a D7000, which I recently saved up for).
